Vote Potato! Or Whatever.

You know, in the midst of the quilting extravaganza going on (8 quilts for the children's hospital through my quilt group to be done by November 4) (YIKES!), I saw this pattern for a "scrubby, bumpy face cloth" that caught my eye for crochet. Fortunately, a wash cloth isn't that big, so it's pretty easy to whip one up. I should be done with mine later today (assuming I crochet while waiting in line to vote early), and it's a nice natural off-white color.

I am finding my skin has gone to crap since I was diagnosed with rosacea, not because of the rosacea itself, but because the dermatologist's advice was to use this really mild soap and only that on my face. And also to avoid sunlight, heat, cold, caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, and spicy foods.

So in addition to being sober, un-caffeinated, tepid, and ghost-like (all the qualities of a potato, which is pretty much the only "safe" food I can eat, it seems), my skin went all flaky because I quit exfoliating and changed moisturizers. I've hit that point where I'm ready to take a stiff drink and said "Screw the doctors!" and scrub my face. Only now, I can clean it with a homemade scrubby, bumpy face cloth, which will hopefully make my face less scrubby and bumpy.

And on the idea of voting: I don't care who you vote for. Just vote. You're not going to change my mind, and I'm not going to change yours, so I don't even want to discuss politics. Tell me instead who you'd vote for if you could elect a skin care product to run the country.

I vote for Biore, because I would like to see a big pore strip laid across the country and all the nasty bits picked up by the adhesive strip. I understand that Biore doesn't really do anything, but seeing all the bad stuff in one place just makes you feel better :)

I'll play my pharmacist role here instead of making an attempt at an witty comment. My skin is very sensitive (plus eczema as a child, and mild rosacea now). Aveeno Ultra Calming Foaming Cleanser works great as a cleanser. I believe it has helped reduce the redness. I use that in the morning. I like it so much that my mom ships it to me b/c I can't get it over here. I use Cetaphil bar soap at night if I've worn makeup, the Ultra Calming stuff if not. The Aveeno website lists an Ultra Calming night cream and a daily moisturizer - alas, I can't run to the imaginary Singapore Target to check them out for myself. I use Neutrogena Healthy Defense SPF 45 Daily Moisturizer in the morning - this is the only high SPF product for daily wear that doesn't irritate my skin. It's so good for me I have that shipped in too. At night I use tiny bit of Cetaphil Lotion as a moisturizer. If I have a bit of flakiness, I use a damp washcloth and very gently wipe away the flakes. Do not scrub hard - it WILL irritate. Wash with lukewarm water, never hot, and pat the face dry instead of rubbing. Apply moisturizers while the face is still damp.

I believe Cetaphil products are wonderful for people with sensitive skin, and I use the heavier cream on my son's eczema with great results. Neutrogena and Aveeno are good too, you just need to know about the additional ingredients which may be irritating. I recently tried all sorts of over-the-counter night "anti-aging" creams with very irritating results, so I've come to terms with my forehead and laugh lines and crow's feet. Oh well, we all droop, pucker, and sag sometime, as Sean says, so you'd better have a personality! Email me separately and I can talk to you more about rosacea meds and whatever your MD told you.
